About
Dr. McDonough recently joined Mat-Su Heart after six years at Alaska Heart and a distinguished 14 year career in the United States Army. He brings with him a strong commitment to clinical excellence, patient-centered care, and community-focused cardiology.
Dr. McDonough graduated from the United States Military Academy in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and began his service as an intelligence officer with U.S. Army Alaska. During that time, he met and, in 2003, married his wife and best friend, Beth. He earned his medical degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2007, was promoted to captain, and completed his internal medicine residency at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington.
He went on to complete a cardiovascular medicine fellowship at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio in 2013 and an interventional cardiology fellowship at Duke University Medical Center in 2014. Over the next five years, he served as a clinical associate professor with Texas Tech University, training physician assistant students and internal medicine residents at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, Texas. There, he also served as director of the cardiac catheterization lab and officer In charge of the cardiovascular technician program, helping train over half of the Army’s cardiovascular techs.
As a founding member of BorderRAC, Dr. McDonough helped transform emergency cardiovascular care across the El Paso region. In 2016, as chief of cardiology, he established the region’s first structural heart program and performed El Paso’s first transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).
Now at Mat-Su Heart, Dr. McDonough continues to apply his knowledge and leadership to advancing cardiovascular care throughout Alaska. He is honored to serve the Mat-Su community and is committed to delivering the highest standard of cardiovascular care with compassion, precision, integrity and a patient first approach.
